Club History

2008

This year will be a very exciting year in the history of the Club as during the winter months we have made significant additions/improvements to: * Training equipment * Coaching staff * Playing equipment * Committee structure * Policies and Codes of Conduct This is primarily in response to the growth of the Club over the last 6 years from a group of hackers, blockers and slingers playing the occasional friendly in between beers each year to a competitive Community Sports Club with over 50 members of all ages and abilities.

We have been working very closely with the ECB to achieve this, and in fact we are well on our way towards achieving the coveted ECB ClubMark status (see http://www.ecb.co.uk/ecb/development/clubmark,74,BP.html for more details), which we hope to achieve by the end of this year. This status will allow the Club to stand out amongst our local rivals and demonstrates the Club’s dedication to the following: * Providing a fun and safe environment for all cricketers of all abilities

  • To be completely accessible to all, irrespective of age, gender, race, income or disability * To provide both competitive and social forms of cricket
  • To serve the interest of the members

2007

The 1sts rounded off the summer with a good win against Royston and finished the season in 3rd place, a great achievement in what has been a much more competitive division this year. They are looking to build on this in 2008, aiming for promotion and a good cup run at the very least. Charlie S broke a new Club record by bowling 10 straight overs wearing a box. Owing to a shock Thriplow win against Babraham on the last day of the season, Cambourne 2nd XI finished 2nd in Junior League 4 South B, finishing a great season in an unexpected promotion winning position. However, due to a 5 point administration penalty they were deducted 5 points by the CCA and subsequently finished third. This year saw the Club`s first entry into the Transitional League, where Juniors and Seniors get to play in a competetive and enjoyable environment. This was seen as a great success by all.

2006

Cambourne Cricket Club has gone from strength to strength this summer as the club have enjoyed success in their first season of competitive cricket. After winter net sessions that proved to be far more popular than anticipated, Cambourne made the decision to enter a 2nd team into the CCA Junior Division 4 North B league after another team pulled out at the last moment. Both teams met up at the ground in Lower Cambourne on the first day of the season where club caps were presented to all team members and Councillor Daphne Spink formally opened the ground for competitive cricket by taking the bails off the stumps with a well aimed throw. Unfortunately though the weather intervened for both matches that day as indeed it did for the majority of May before the sunshine arrived in June.

During the next two months the first team in particular put an excellent run of results together and a good cup run saw them eventually knocked out by Barrington at the quarter final stage. The seconds had a difficult start to the season due to a lack of players but bounced back with some excellent results later on. This enabled the club to give valuable senior team experience to many of the promising youngsters coming through. The 1st team were set for a top of the table showdown with league leaders Great Chishill II in the penultimate game of the season which could have given Cambourne the league title but unfortunately the game was called off due to bad weather. It didnt matter in any case as Cambourne secured 2nd spot, losing only one game all season, which gives them promotion to the CCA Junior Division 4 South A next year. The 2nd team finished 6th from 8 in their league, winning 4 and losing 6.

Cambourne entered two junior teams into leagues, the U13 and U15, who battled valiantly throughout the summer. Despite many of the U13s playing over their age group, there were some fantastic performances and their efforts were rewarded with a win in the last game of the season. The U15s have found their first season tough going but there are some outstanding individuals and they are hoping to gain on the progress they made last season.

It has been a fantastic season for Cambourne Cricket Club despite being let down by the developers with rather primitive facilities, which comprised a portacabin, a portaloo and a storage shed. The lack of gardening equipment in particular has hampered the pitch maintenance despite the best efforts of the grounds team. As a result the wicket can only be described as "bowler friendly". However, the club should have a pavilion for the start of next season now construction work has begun so the club are looking forward to another successful season of competitive cricket. Two people in particular deserve special praise for their efforts. Chris Threadgold took on the entire junior section almost single handedly and did a fantastic job managing the U15 and U13 teams as well as organising regular training sessions for all age groups every Sunday morning. Danny White has helped in the formation of the club and has tirelessy looked after the pitch whatever the weather.

2005

Unfortunately Jason left Cambourne during this year which left the running of the club predominantly on Paul's shoulders. With the help of a few enthusiastic members (Ben, Chris Culshaw and Danny White).

  • We continued the successful net training sessions at Histon
  • With help from Ben the donation of a mobile cricket net from Campbells
  • Club obtained playing/ground maintenance equipment from the Lords Taverners

During this year the club decided to encourage youngsters to join the cricket club, Paul arranged and implemented by using the mobile cricket a presence at the Cambourne yearly fete. Danny and Paul also held enticer cricket sessions under the banner of the Sports & Social committee at the MUGA.

  • This year saw our first win in Cambourne colours by beating a pub side in a 20 over game at St. Neots.
  • Further negotiations with the ECB, SCDC, and Developers on the Cricket square and outfield.

2004

Following on from the foundation layed the previous year Jason and Paul achieved for the club:

  • The drafting and agreement of the Club Constitution.
  • The first Club coaching sessions provided by the ECB at Histon Recreation ground
  • With help from Chris Culshaw our first website presence
  • A couple of friendlies played away from home (Mark, you can add details from the scorebook)
  • Continued negotiations with the developers on the Pavilion design and location.
  • Negotiations with the ECB, SCDC, and Developers on the Cricket square and outfield.

2003

Cambourne Cricket Club was officially established by Jason Clatworthy and Paul Cooke in this year. Their efforts resulted in the donation of a mobile cricket net from Campbells, playing equipment from the Lords Taverners, the first Club coaching sessions provided by the ECB and the Club Constitution. The Clubs inaugural match was a friendly against Harrow which we narrowly lost by about 100 runs... ;-
