Cambourne II vs Cokenach Match Report

Cambourne II produced a good all round team display after beating Cokenach II by 5 wickets on a rainy day at the Cokenach ground.

After Cambourne lost the toss, Cokenach decided to bat on a flat wicket and the game started slowly with few runs and no wickets. Ed Garratt came on as first change bowler and immediately made an impact with his first ball after Matt Casey took a catch at deep square. The celebrations were short lived as Cokenach started to take control with some big hitting from there no1 and a very young but talented no3. The pair put on a big partnership and it looked like the game was slipping away from Cambourne but the vital wicket came under bizarre circumstance. Danny White, having recently been brought on to steady the bowling attack, tempted their dangerous no1 into a long drive under which Chris Cundell was waiting. The ball was in the air for what seemed a lifetime and everyone knew how important the next few seconds were going to be. Cundell watched it all the way and held on to what seemed to everyone as an excellent catch but a few seconds later it was evident that the catch wasn't as clean as it appeared. Somehow Cundell had managed to break his tooth again after missing the initial flight of the ball with his hands, but caught it again at the second attempt after it bounced off his mouth. A hugely important wicket at the expense of one of Cambourne's players, or so it seemed. Incredibly Cundell returned to the game a few overs later despite a wonky tooth and blood all over his shirt, fantastic commitment.

Their no3 was still a danger even though wickets were falling at the other end but despite a few previous dropped catches, Danny White held onto one and the game swung into Cambourne's favour. The rest of the wickets fell for minimal runs with Danny White and Matt Casey both completing good spells of bowling. George Harrison wrapped things up with the last couple of wickets bowling one and running out the last man after a mix-up by the last batting pair. Cokenach finished with a respectable, but definitely gettable, 144 all out.

Cambourne's reply started well with Ed Garratt and Tim Pryke both moving the score on well before Pryke top edged a full toss to fine leg. Wickets started to fall quickly and at around 40-3 it looked like the 145 target was going to be tougher than expected but a solid partnership between Garratt and Josh White took the score onto 90 before Josh was run out for around 30 runs. After the captain Sunil Sharma was out cheaply LBW shortly after it was left to Garratt and Stuart Charles to finish things off, reaching their target with around 4 overs and 5 wickets left to spare. Garratt put in a magnificent batting performance and held the innings together, finishing an agonising 1 short of his 50 with 49no and Charles finished with 30no.

A great game then which could have gone either way, but Cambourne finally came through keeping up their push for promotion. Thanks go to Cokenach who played the game with good spirit throughout, and thanks to Eric for doing an excellent job of umpiring for both innings.
