An under-strength third team was found lacking in the face of the young but competent Sawston IV. Captain Wood won the toss and elected to bat, heading to the middle with Chirag, but Sawston’s bowling proved tricky for the openers, with Chirag dismissed in the 6th over and Sunil following quickly behind – run out for a duck after facing just three balls. With the total standing at 13 for 2 after ten overs, Martin stepped up and set about accelerating the run rate, hitting some classy boundaries and running well between the wickets until his hamstring twanged and he had to have a runner brought on.

At the other end things did not go so well: Simon was caught, and David followed a few overs later, bowled by Sawston’s spinner. That began a lower-order collapse, with wickets falling thick and fast – Alistair, Phillip and Archie failed to trouble the scorers and no-one else got more than one run. When Martin was finally caught on 37, it was up to Darren and Rishi to hold out as long as they could. Unfortunately, this turned out not to be very long, owing to some tight bowling from Sawston, and the final total was 79 from 29 overs.

After tea we set about the unenviable task of defending our total. Captain wood threw every secret weapon in the bowling attack at the Sawston openers, with Alistair, Archie, Simon, Sunil, Chirag, Darren and Dan all taking a turn, but the batsmen stuck it out – knocking off the runs in 11.2 overs.
