Contrary to the weather forecast, the teams were greeted with blue skies at Warboys but the friendly match saw Cambourne's first ever 3rd team game end in a narrow defeat. Cambourne batted first and a major collapse saw the team all out, barely reaching 50 off 20 overs with Ragiv (23) and Charles (20) the only players to get into double figures. Because it was a friendly, the Warboys captain allowed Cambourne to bat on and J.White (around 44*) and K.Gandhi (around 40*) taking full advantage 2nd time around to take the 3rds onto 177 - 14.
Cambourne started in the field well enough with Healy and Charles bowling good line and length before a big hitting number 2 for Warboys took control with a string of boundaries off Charles. A bowling change from Cundell saw an immediate return as Chelliah got the strong Warboys batter caught in the covers after miscuing another big hit and from then on the game was well balanced with wickets falling in between a steady run rate from Warboys. V.Joseph in particular bowled very well and he was well supported by Toby, Westwood, Ragiv and Cundell with Dale keeping wicket superbly. With 4 overs to go Cambourne took Warboys' last wicket but as per the Cambourne innings, they were allowed to bat again and the winning runs were hit in the penultimate over.
A great day of cricket and a big thanks to Warboys for playing the game in such an excellent spirit - a fantastic tea provided as well. Having a look at the excellent facilities at Warboys, I think we can learn a lot from the club and what they have achieved in a short amount of time. They had nothing 3 years ago but a re-organisation in the committee has seen them become clubmark affiliated and they now have superb outdoor nets, an all weather pitch, 3 senior teams (as opposed to just 1 3 years ago) and some very promising young players as a direct result of these new facilities. Its an example we can aim to follow.
Somewhat over-exposed photos from the game are available here.
